MUSICAL THEATER AT NY UKE FEST

It's no accident that Theater for the New City is home NY Uke Fest.
Theater for the New City is one of the planet's oldest and most venerable venues for new and experimental works of theater art. It is widely recognized as the cradle of performance art, as well as commissioning and producing Pulitzer-winning drama. From the outset, NY Uke Fest was conceived as part music festival and part musical theater and performance art festival. The uniting force being the music of the ukulele. Theater for the New City was a natural fit.

This year NY Uke Fest 2008 is proud to present 2 new musical theater productions.
The first is " Sex! Drugs! & Ukuleles!" - a full length musical comedy set at the end of the 21 st Century -- with book and lyrics by Uke Jackson and music by Terry Waldo. This show will be in the final 4-day weekend of a five week run as an Equity-approved showcase production.
Celia Rowlson-Hall the director choreographer.

" Sex! Drugs! & Ukuleles!" runs Thursday thru Sunday April 3-6 at 8 pm each evening in the Community Space Theater. Ticket availability will be limited, and included with a Full Fest pass to NY Uke Fest 2008 if purchased by February 15.

Our first year we were honored to present the New York premier of the ever-original and brilliant "American Novelty" written and performed by Pops Bayless, with his Austin, Texas-based Shorty Long band. The storyline cascades thru the lives of 10 fictional novelty song writers in the 20 th century. It is absolute musical mirth, wry and witty from start to finish.

Last year, we were pleased to have Eilidh MacAskill, a performance artist from Scotland, appear on our stages. She performed her daily ukulele ceilidh (which rhymes when spoken).

This year, 2008, in addition to "Sex! Drugs! & Ukuleles!", we're presenting a preview of a one-man show "God Loves Tiny Tim" by and with the inimitable Spats White, at 3 pm on Sunday April 6, in the Community Space Theater.

In the future, we hope to continue presenting musical theater or performance art that puts the ukulele front and center. We present original pieces that are produced and ready to go.

Audition presentations by invitation. Please contact the Festival Director with your queries.

PLEASE NOTE:We will be observing the traditional theatrical "Hush Zone" in the lobby areas of the theater building from 8 pm - 10 pm each evening. (Don't worry, there's an open jam downstairs in the Cabaret Theater, where you can play your ukulele to your heart's content, and you can go into the Cino Theater and test drive some of the hundreds of ukuleles on display there.)
